Prenatal Meetings
We will have two prenatal meetings (in addition to the initial interview)  in
which we will discuss your fears, hopes, and desires around childbirth.  I get
to know more about both the mother and her partner, learning about how I
can best help both of you to have a positive experience in childbirth.  I will
help you develop a birth plan that addresses the issues that are most
important to you.  If there are any questions or concerns that come up about
your pregnancy we can discuss these as well.  We will talk about how to get
the information you need to be comfortable in making decisions during labor.
Labor Support
When you are in labor and ready to have my support I will come to your home,
hospital, or birthing center to join you.  I stay until about an hour or two after
the birth, when everyone is settled in.  I provide suggestions for position
changes, visualizations, relaxation techniques, and lots of encouragement.  I
help the partner to be as fully involved in the birth as they feel comfortable.
Encouraging them to maintain the emotional connection that is so important to
the mother in birthing the baby.  While not getting overwhelmed by the
intensity of the birth.  I help the partner with suggestions for positions and
breathing to help the mother.  I let my intuition guide me for helping the
mother and partner.  Sometimes I may be in the background giving words of
support, and other times I may be the primary support person.  Throughout
the labor I am available for whatever the laboring family may need.  Whether
it is cool washcloth, support for difficult decisions, or help through the
contraction.  I support the family with whatever decisions they make
regardless of my choices or preferences.

Postpartum support continues the connection with the new family, through
phone contact and two visits to the home after the birth.  I generally visit with
the family within the first week of the birth.  This is to check on how the
family is doing and answer any questions or concerns they may have.  I also,
check back again, with the family during the first month after the birth to see
if I can assist with any further resources and support that the family may
need.  Families who need additional postpartum doula support can contact me
for my role as a postpartum doula.
